오늘은 영어의 기초문법, 전치사(preposition)에 대해 설명해보겠습니다.

전치사 (Preposition) 란?

---

전치사의 경우 " in/on/at " 등 주로 명사(noun) 앞에서 명사를 수식해주는 역할입니다. 토익과 같은 영어 시험에서도 전치사, 부사의 위치를 파악하면 문제를 빠르게 풀 수 있습니다.

전치사의 위치?

전치사의 위치는 명사의 앞 입니다. ex) I'm at home ( "at" 전치사는 명사 "home" 앞에 있다. ) 전치사가 문장에 나오는 경우 전치사 다음에 명사가 아닌 동사 혹은 to부정사 등은 올 수 없습니다. 이렇게 전치사가 명사 앞을 수식해 주는 경우 전명구라고 짧게 줄여서 부를 수 있으며 부사로 볼 수 있습니다.

 

 

전치사의 종류?

전치사의 종류는 크게 4 가지 ( 시점전치사, 기간전치사, 장소/위치전치사, 방향전치사) 로 분류됩니다.

 

1. 시점 전치사

in : ~에 (월/연도/계절/오전/오후/저녁) ex) in April, in 2018 at : ~에 (시간/정확한 시점/밤 ex) at 8 P.M. , at the end of April on : ~에 (특정일/날짜, 요일) ex) on my birthday. on July 18. before : ~전에 (시점) = prior to / in advance of ex) before I go out. after : ~후에 (시점,기간) = following ex) after I finish my homework from : ~부터 (시점) = beginning / starting (in/on), as of ex) one week from week since : 현재완료(과거)  ex) since last week by : ~까지 (동작이나 상태가 특정 시점에 종료될때 ex) be submitted by Tuesday until : ~까지 (동작이나 상태가 계속되다가 종료될때 ex) be postponed until further notice

 

2. 기간 전치사

for : ~동안에 (기간[숫자]) ex) for ten days during : ~동안에 (기간) ex) during the last ten days over : ~동안에 (기간) ex) over the ten days. in : ~동안에 (기간) ex) in ten days (10일 내에/후에) throughout : ~내내 (기간) ex) throughout the year. within : ~이내에 (기간) ex) within ten business days.

 

3. 장소/위치 전치사

in : ~에 (월/연도/계절/오전/오후/저녁) ex) in April, in 2018 at : ~에 (좁은 지점) ex) at the parking lot on : ~에/위에 (표면 위 지점) = over/above/up ex) on my desk throughout : ~전체에 (장소) ex) throughout chemical laboratory opposite : ~맞은편에 (장소[건물]) = across from + 건물 ex) opposite from this building. next to : ~옆에 (장소) = beside/by ex) next to the bank. near : ~근처에 (장소)  ex) near my house between : ~사이에 (장소) ex) between school and library among : ~사이에/~중 하나 (복수명사, 셋 이상) ex) among the countries

 

 

4. 방향 전치사

to : ~에게/~로/~까지 (목적지/대상) ex) travel to the mountain from : ~로부터 (출발점/출처) ex) start from my house through : ~을 지나서 (장소) = past ex) through downtown along : ~을 따라서 (길/강/해변) = along with/along side/according to  ex) along the street across : ~건너/~전체에 (길/강/해변)  ex) across Austrailia into : ~안으로 (장소) ex) into the box onto : ~위로 (장소) ex) onto the top out of : ~밖으로 (장소) ex) out of this room toward(s) : ~쪽으로 (방향) ex) come toward my home

 

 

특수한 전치사 종류

---

 

1. About. + 명사 : 전치사. ~에 대해서

about의 의미 ~에 대해서 라는 같은 의미를 가진 표현들이 많이 있습니다.

About 동의어 정리 :  = concerning, regarding, as to, as far, in reference to, with reference to, in regard to = with regard to, pertinent to, pertaining to, on, over

 

2. in case of. : 전치사. ~하는 경우에

In case of (접속사) 동의어 정리:  = in case (that), in the event that   In case of (전치사) 동의어 정리:  = in case of, in the event of

 

3. except (for). : 전치사. ~을 제외하고

except (for) 접속사 동의어 정리 :  = except that   except (for) 전치사 동의어 정리 :  = except (for), aside from, apart from, save for, excluding

 

 

4. 전치사 by, on/upon, in, without + ing 형태

by -ing : ~ 함으로써  ex) Ms.Choi will be happy by eating delicious food. on/upon -ing : ~ 하자마자  ex) She will have a breakfast on waking up.   in -ing : ~ 하는데 있어서  ex) Boss said some tips in checking some reports.   without -ing : ~없이  ex) I post some writing without checking, that's why I need someone's help to check it.
